Jeronimos Monastery
One of the most beautiful historical and symbolic addresses in the list of places to visit in Lisbon is the Jeronimos Monastery in the Belem region.
Its architecture and ambiance is a reason to be fascinated in itself. In its architectural details, the Portuguese Manueline decorations, the splendor of the Late Gothic and Renaissance periods are immediately noticeable. The monastery, which was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1983, has a European and world-wide importance.
Jeronimos Monastery, which is among the monumental structures of the world, has been seen as a National Monument since 1907. Although its construction started in the 16th century, the monastery was completed and opened for use 100 years later.
It is said that 70 kg of gold was used in its construction. The construction of the monastery was financed with revenues from the spice trade and is among the most important structures for Portugal.
In the monastery, which takes its name from a religious community in the region, it is impossible to miss the magnificence of the doors; the beauties and fine details of its architecture are dazzling. In addition, many sarcophagi, religious-royal-maritime figures, impressive sculptures, stonework samples and stone tombs in the monastery invite you to a pleasant and interesting tour.
The stone tombs of the world-famous explorer Vasco de Gama and the famous poet Luis de Canvas are also located in the church. Since the monastery is a complex structure, there are many places you can visit outside the church section.
Make sure to visit the National Archaeological Museum and the Maritime Museum in the monastery. Museum and monastery entrance fees or hours may change. If you want, you can also choose to buy a combined ticket.
Beware of Long Queues!
Lisbon can be quite crowded, especially in spring and summer. That's why you can buy your Jerónimos Monastery ticket in advance and get the chance to avoid long queues. By the way, Lisbon Card holders can enter the monastery free of charge.
